“We’re very proud to see the Camp Chief Hector Bunkhouse Project receive an Honourable Mention at the World of Modular awards. This project was a great example of what can be achieved through a highly collaborative approach between Camp Chief Hector, Colliers, LOLA and their multiple subconsultants, and ROC Modular. The team got together early with open communication, strong coordination, and shared commitment to quality. This was our second project together with the same, full team, which helped us deliver a successful project in a challenging environment.
We appreciate the opportunity to have been part of such an innovative and well-executed build, and we’re happy to see the new space being used to its fullest by the staff at Camp Chief Hector.”

Architectural Excellence
Camp Chief Hector’s new staff bunkhouses, delivered in partnership with LOLA Architecture and Buttcon, consist of two buildings, each made from four prefabricated modules for efficiency, safety, and quality. The 12-bedroom layout balances private space with communal living, featuring shared washrooms, open kitchen and living areas, and laundry.
Interiors blend rustic charm with durable finishes, including vinyl flooring, wainscoting, tack-able bedroom walls, and solid phenolic partitions for privacy. Large windows maximize natural light and views.
Exteriors use natural cladding and earthy tones to harmonize with the Kananaskis setting, while pitched roofs and generous overhangs improve snow management and durability. A front deck creates a welcoming social space, with a rear deck connecting to a fire pit and storage.
Placement and orientation minimize environmental impact, replacing outdated buildings while enhancing camp character and fostering community in a sensitive mountain park environment.

Technical Innovation & Sustainability
Understanding the camp’s year-round operation and commitment to staff well-being, the modular bunkhouses were designed as durable, low-maintenance, four-season buildings to attract and retain employees. Prefabrication in a controlled indoor environment ensured high quality, reduced site disruption, and preserved the pristine natural setting.
The buildings meet Fire Smart requirements and incorporate barrier-free design, including two accessible bedrooms, ramps, and wider compliant corridors. A pitched roof with overhang facilitates snow removal and weather protection.
The open-concept communal area near the washroom, designed for high traffic, enhances visibility and user flow. The gender-neutral washroom features modern finishes and a safe, inclusive layout.
Modular construction enabled precise implementation of technical features, energy-efficient planning, and resource-conscious execution, delivering a resilient, sustainable solution tailored to the camp’s unique operational needs.

A Project Built to Be Recognized
From design through delivery, the Camp Chief Hector Bunkhouse Project stands as proof of what a tightly aligned team can achieve in a remote, sensitive, and demanding environment. The World of Modular Honourable Mention affirms what the team set out to do from day one: deliver a permanent modular dormitory that performs as well as it looks, built for the people who call Camp Chief Hector their workplace.
