ABOUT THE PROJECT

Two identical Modular Staff Housing Bunkhouse Residences for the employees of the YMCA at Camp Chief Hector, located in the beautiful foothills of Exshaw AB. The brand new buildings replace the old bunkhouse providing the staff with modern new housing at the Hector and Bowfort areas. They are designed with safety, accessibility, and durability thoroughly considered, and the buildings minimize their environmental footprint, fitting into the surroundings in a considerate and thoughtful manner. The buildings have been designed to be extremely durable and low maintenance, with the understanding they will see heavy use and may be subject to intense weather conditions, and have also been designed to comply with Fire Smart Requirements.

The design reflects the character of the camp, using natural colours that play off the surrounding areas. A pitched roof with an overhang directly over the entry allows for snow removal and protection from the elements. A large front deck allows for a welcoming gatherings space at the entry, while the back door leads to a smaller deck with access to an outdoor fire pit. An outdoor storage area is provided near the fire pit to allow for storage of outdoor chairs and fire pit accessories.
